BALDWIN ELECTRIC MEMBERSHIP COOPERATIVE

Since its inception in the late 1930s, the electric cooperative had relied on an annual meeting to determine its elected board and policy changes. However, with the growth of Gulf Shores condos which led to members living in nearly every state in the nation, as well as declining meeting attendance, the cooperative was experiencing difficulty attracting a quorum to enact important policy changes. Therefore, Baldwin EMC decided to conduct a massive mail-in ballot campaign to select its leadership and determine future direction. In addition to the ballot and voting information, the client wished to enhance the communications effort by distributing its annual report separately. These undertakings represented two 40,000 individualized mailings throughout the U.S. and 12 foreign countries.

COLONIAL MALL BEL AIR

Bel Air Mall was purchased in 1998 by Colonial Properties Trust. In doing so, Colonial initiated a number of changes at the mall, including $1.5 million in renovations and the addition of several nationally recognized tenants. In 2000, among continuing improvements, Colonial decided to change the long standing name of the mall from Bel Air Mall to Colonial Mall Bel Air. Colonial wanted an event that would impress corporate officials and bring awareness of the changes that had taken place since its purchase. The target of their efforts would be area residents who had been patrons of Bel Air throughout its 33 year history. Their mesbut quality and commitment to service.

PIONEER ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE

Pioneer Electric Cooperative serves a sparse, mostly disadvantaged area in central Alabama. In 2002, several Pioneer customers grew disgruntled over the rising costs
of their electric bills. This customer base eventually grew to become the Rural Electric Member Action Committee (REMAC). Soon, Pioneer, which had enjoyed high member satisfaction since its inception, was under siege. The group accused Pioneer’s board of mismanagement and the cooperative with unfair customer policies. Soon, REMAC organized group meetings, conducted an effective negative media campaign and watched as their membership blossomed. As part of their strategy, three of their members filed a lawsuit charging Pioneer with mismanagement of funds.

COURTAULDS FIBERS

In 1992, The Mobile Press Register published an article that linked a chemical Courtaulds Fibers uses in its manufacturing process with birth defects. The company, which has operated a facility located just outside Mobile since 1952, releases approximately 45 million pounds of carbon disulfide into the atmosphere annually. Even though Courtaulds emissions met all governmental standards and posed no health threat in the amounts released, the company suddenly had a severe image problem. This was compounded when 33 employees returned from Atlanta’s Emory University with medical examinations reporting that exposure to the chemical had harmed their health.

TALLAHASSEE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

Tallahassee Community Hospital is a fully accredited, acute care hospital serving the residents of North Florida and South Georgia. Established in 1979, the health care facility currently has 180 state-licensed beds and a 650-person hospital staff, including approximately 250 professional nurses and over 300 physicians. The board of directors decided to invest 100 million dollars in a new, state-of-the- art facility that would phase out the current hospital. In order to properly announce an initiate of this magnitude, the hospital turned to us.
